How long does it really take to learn?
This is one of the first questions people ask during workshops, and whilst the answer isn’t definitive, you need to ask yourself why you’re learning. Like with anything else.. it depends.
It depends on a few things such as:
Prior experience
Time available to practice
Practicing the right techniques
Motivation
Patience
BUT if you want a definitive answer, you could be writing confidently using a dip pen within a month, but this would require consistent & frequent daily practice tracing drills and letters on repeat and then progressing to just using a line guide and then without a line guide. The absolute best thing about learning is the journey, you’ll find with this skill that you’ll be able to see leaps and bounds of improvements in the early stages. So make sure you keep a record of your practice to give you that motivation when you reflect on how far you’ve come.
How it started (2017)
How it’s going now (2024)
Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll find that learning never stops, because there are so many variations with letters, tools, methods that you could experiment with.
